We would like to see all our
PTAs have a person for this position on their board: a Multicultural Chair.
Schools in our district have organized international fairs, diversity nights, or
other events of this type so if it works well in your school; the
Multicultural Chair can also be the Programs Chair, Volunteer Chair or other.
-
Serves in their school’s PTA board as an advocate for
multicultural and diversity issues. Doesn’t have to speak another language.
-
Is aware of
school demographics and works to encourage involvement of all groups. Promotes knowledge of other lands through
activities related to their specific holidays.
-
Involves parents from other countries in the PTA and in the U.S.
school culture. Uses the “What is PTA?” brochure to ensure that people
understand the importance of joining PTA (it is translated into various
languages).
-
Models inclusiveness at PTA meetings and functions by welcoming
everyone with a smile and kind word. If there are new families that a
cultural ambassador has contacted, the multicultural chair will welcome them to
the PTA.
-
Makes sure parents are aware of adult-education classes offered by
the district, as well as English classes for those who do not speak the
language. Encourages families to join the public library and other recreational
services offered by the city.
-
Checks with the campus contact in the school about families that
are new to the country and invites them to the next PTA general meeting. Will
greet them at that meeting and introduce them to the PTA board.
